Since the goal of this blog is to create interest in and visibility for Seizan Ryu Kempo Jujutsu and the Connecticut Academy of Martial Arts I want to discuss a specific training point I came across recently.

Seperatley from the classes held at CtAMA in North Stonington, CT I hold short classes twice a week at Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, CT for the PCU MISSISSIPPI (SSN 782). During these trainings we wear camo utilities without the blouse. Recently, I decided our focus would be kicks. Not flying or grossly high kicks, just standard waist high roundhouse kicks using the shin as the weapon. In order to practice the kicks I brought in a kicking pad from the dojo. As always with kempo training I disussed how to hold the kicking pad. The areas of emphasis were holding the pad close to you, protecting your knee and not grabbing the sides of the pad since a misguided kick could hit the hands. At the end of the discussion we began practice. Almost immediately the steel tip of the boot came around the corner of the pad and connected with my elbow. This happened a couple of times before I recognized the standard pad holding I had set up for experienced kempo students did not suffice for untrained personnel wearing steel tipped boots. The reasons for this are two fold. First, the foot, which is normally extended with an experienced kick (using the shin as the weapon) was in a relaxed position allowing it to snake around the pad and find my elbow. Second, the weight and size of the boot significantly changed the momentum of the kick, allowing it to kick further into the pad than 'normal.'

This was not the first training session I had in untilities (camo uniform), but it was the first time I brought in a kicking pad for roundhouse kicks. ...lesson learned...

I adjusted the hold on the pad and after couple iterations had figured out how to hold the pad without the potential elbow impact.

I look forward to finding other situations where the dojo 'standard' is not sufficent!
